Our Mandate
Inspired by Jesus’ ‘Great Commandment’ and ‘Great Commission’ our mandate is: To transform each person into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
Our Passion
To be who? To be a biblically functioning community of fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ who are passionately concerned about loving and reaching the lost and broken hearted.
To do what? Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are committed to leading people to faith in Jesus, growing them to maturity and wholeness in Christ, enabling them to discover their gifts and equipping them to serve God.
And how? We will endeavour to do this in contemporary, relevant and creative ways through developing personal relationships, a range of small groups, and outreach and celebratory events.
1. Great Commandment: Mark 12:28-31 " '...Of all the commandments, which is the most important?' 'The most important one,' answered Jesus, 'is this: 'Hear, 0 Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."
2. Great Commission: Matt 28: 18-20 "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' "
Doctrinal Statement
The Doctrinal Basis from the Constitution of the Baptist Union of Victoria:
1. The divine inspiration and supreme authority of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.
2. The existence of one God in three persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
3. The deity and incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity.
4. The fallen, sinful and lost estate of all people.
5. The salvation of men and women from the penal consequences and power of sin through the perfect obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ, His atoning death, His resurrection from the dead, His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His unchanging priesthood.
6. The immediate work of the Holy Spirit in the regeneration of men and women, in their sanctification, and in their preservation to the heavenly Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ.
7. The necessity, in order to know salvation, of repentance towards God and of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
8. The resurrection of the dead, and the final judgment of all people by the Lord Jesus Christ.
9. The two ordinances of the Lord Jesus Christ, namely Baptism and the Lord's Supper, which are of perpetual obligation: Baptism being the immersion of believers upon the profession of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and a symbol of the fellowship of the regenerate in His death, burial and resurrection; the Lord's Supper being a memorial, until He comes, of the sacrifice of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Baptism
Just like a wedding ring symbolizes the fact that a significant and lasting relationship has been entered into between a man and a woman, Baptism is the outward symbol of an inward and personal commitment made between a person and Jesus Christ. If you have made a commitment to Jesus what is the answer to the question, “Should I be Baptised?”. If Christ is now your forgiver and leader, the answer is “Yes”. Just as the bride and groom tell of their love for one another through the symbol of rings, you may feel that God is leading you to show the world through Baptism of your union with Christ. The invisible miracle that has happened in you can be demonstrated through the sacrament that Christ himself gave us in his own example by being Baptised.
If Baptism is something you would like to know more about or if you would like to be Baptised, please contact our Pastor.
Membership
Victorians are renowned for their enthusiasm as sports lovers and spectators. Some people choose not only to attend their favourite game but become a member of a particular club. It’s a way of demonstrating their particular passion and commitment.
Likewise, at Albert Park/Port Melbourne Baptist Church, we are wanting everyone to experience the warmth and acceptance that Jesus offers to all. However, if you have committed your life to Jesus Christ as your Saviour and expressed this publicly through adult baptism, then you are encouraged and welcome to express your “belonging” to this Church by becoming a member.
